Andrew’s life was defined by his relationships with the women
who bore him children. Andrew loved Joan from the moment he
first met her and in order to get her to marry him, he schemed and
got her pregnant. When Joan learned that her pregnancy was no
accident, her curtailment of sex led Andrew to Miriam, who he
also got pregnant. Miriam’s pregnancy was no accident either, but
it wasn’t Andrew who was the schemer this time.
Joan forgave Andrew for getting her pregnant the first time, and
before long she was pregnant again. Now Andrew had two women
pregnant at the same time. Caring for two pregnant women was a
challenge that Andrew didn’t stray from, but after the birth of the
babies, attitudes changed and so did relationships. Andrew had
four children now, (Joan had twins) but he wasn’t with either Joan
or Miriam anymore.
Andrew wasn’t finished making babies, nor was he finished with
love, as he thought he was. After Joan, he didn’t want to love
again; but Audrey caused a reactivation of feelings within his soul
that he thought were dead. Andrew’s exploits were responsible for
the birth of seven children by four women. Andrew, for a time,
turned away from those children and traveled a road towards
destruction.
By story’s end, we see Andrew’s oldest son, A.J., now
twenty-six, destined to follow in his father’s footsteps. His
relationships with women show that what is new is old, or is it the
other way around? Which ever is correct, life comes full circle for
the Grant family.
